If you are using beans, the secret ingredient is a cup of strong black coffee. Do not under any circumstances add a jar of peppers (like sliced jalapenos) in vinegar. I've seen it happen and it's a sad thing. And consider your carne too; is it beef or pork? Bottom line is that it's like making a stew. Begin by cutting your meat into small pieces by hand (don't even think about using ground turkey or something equally evil). Brown them in hot fat or oil and build from there. Coffee comes in after you've done that part.
