What is Asafoetida?

I have a question about the ingredient "Asafoetida" on the recipe " Baigan Bhartha on Makki Di roti Bites" from Devangi.

Asafoetida is a spice. This spice is used as a digestive aid, in food as a condiment, and in pickles.
It is widely used in Indian Cooking , mostly in curries and lentil dishes. It is used for flavoring a dish and adding aroma. It has a pungent taste to it. It has lot of medicinal uses, especially for digestion. Add only a pinch of it to any Indian dishes, as it is a strong spice.

You can find it at any Indian Store or any Whole Foods store.
