Any suggestions for working with fondant for the first time?

i'd say just be patient. fondant is a super fun thing to work with. i completely agree with the above comment but would add that if you are going to be working with it for a while (ie. making flowers that could take a while) just make sure you keep the excess covered because it can dry out.

Frost the cake smoothly with about 1/4" thick of frosting. (This helps achieve a smooth finish to the fondant.)
Knead the fondant well, so it is malleable.
Dust your surface with corn starch.
Roll the fondant out like dough or clay. If there are any bubbles (which is likely) use a needle to pierce them at an angle as you go. The needle hole will roll out this way.
Once you have your fondant about 1/4-inch thick roll it around your rolling pin then transfer it to your cake.
Gently smooth the top, then work your way down the sides of the cake. The fondant will want to bunch in some points, but you should be able to manipulate it into being smooth.
Cut overhang off, and continue to smooth the fondant. Cut off overhang again if needed.
Don't expect perfection. Use strategic decoration to hide any obvious flaws.
