No tours for this guy! The cities you will most want to visit, Bologna, Parma, and Modena are all easily connected by rail and they are short rides. You might want to do a litte research ahead. All have small compact city centers (and are incredibly beautiful). The TCI guides are really good (Touring Club Italy)----I don't know who is publishing them now over here. Do yourself a favor and completely ignore any advice from Rick Steves or his acolytes as he know's nothing about food, or Italy for that matter.

Did exactly that years ago when the world was friendlier. We went armed with a Fodor's Travel Book, a loose idea of what we wanted to see, do and eat and planned day by day. It was wonderful and I recommend traveling ala carte if you are adventurous and with a few like minded buddies. If not, book a reputable tour and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Ciao!
