What other fruit besides strawberries could be used?

Most berries or stone fruits would work. I also think a mix of tropical fruits - kiwi, mango, pineapple, etc.. would be good. I'd avoid apples, bananas, pears - essentially fruits that aren't going to exude much juice when macerated with a little sugar.

What hla said... and in the winter, you can reconstitute dried fruits like figs and prunes and use those!
