What's the best way to cut an onion into chunks before shredding it in the food processor?

I'm tired of making potato latkes with big shreds of onion. Thanks in advance!

To cut an onion into chunks before shredding it in a food processor, you can follow these steps:

Prepare Your Onion: Start by peeling the onion and cutting off the root end. Cut it in half from top to bottom, so you have two halves with the flat, cut side down.

Slice the Onion Halves: Lay one of the onion halves flat on your cutting board. Make vertical cuts (from top to bottom) but not all the way through the onion. Leave about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the root end uncut. This will help hold the onion together as you chop it.

Make Horizontal Cuts: After making the vertical cuts, turn the onion half so that the flat, cut side is facing you. Now, make horizontal cuts across the onion, again being careful not to cut all the way through. These cuts should be perpendicular to the vertical cuts and will create small onion chunks.

Repeat for the Other Half: Repeat the process for the other onion half.

Collect the Chunks: Once you've made both vertical and horizontal cuts, you can gently push down on the onion from the top, and it will naturally fall apart into small chunks. Gather these chunks and transfer them to your food processor for shredding.

By following these steps, you'll have evenly sized onion chunks that are ready to be processed in your food processor. This method can save you time and effort compared to manually shredding the entire onion.

I'd cut in half north pole to south pole, then put the halves, standing up, in the feed tube. With my ancient Cuisinart, I'd buy medium sized onions. And I'd try first with the grating blade and then with the slicing blade, if the grating blade cuts the onions into pieces that are just too small. ;o)
