When I made that recipe, I infused a few tablespoons of vodka overnight with star anise. I don't know if the result resembled arak or ouzo, but it was what I had on hand and I don't think the recipe suffered for it!
Pernod is easy to find, but you can use other anise liqueurs as well. Ricard, another pastis, is a brand you see frequently, too. You could also use ouzo.
