Cannellini are not the same beans as Great Northern, although if you can’t find cannellini, you could use Great Northerns as a substitute. The cannellini have a smoother texture when cooked and are frequently used in Italian (especially Tuscan) recipes. Great Northerns are more typical for recipes from the US/

great northerns are not the same thing. they are white, yes, but smaller than cannelini. i did a taste comparison last year and i prefer the great northerns.
