While it takes 1 additional step, I love the flour frosting from http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/desserts/thate28099s-the-best-frosting-ie28099ve-ever-had/. It is not too sweet, a bit custardy, last in room temperature, has no egg, and less calories. The picture shown in the recipe is a bit grainy, but I found that you can eliminate this problem with 2 options: 1. cook the sugar together with flour and water, or 2. beat the icing longer and leave it overnight in the fridge.
