Just replaced a very old toaster with a Cuisinart CPT-320 two-slice model - really like it so far. Is quite sturdy (the body is mostly steel), and toasts very evenly.
i also tend to buy the less expensive types of toasters after looking at amazon reviews. most don't last but a decade or so of pretty light usage. i don't have a toaster oven or anything big due to space issues. however, one thing to check several times per year is whether your toaster has been recalled. due to their high heat etc. and electrical use, i by chance noticed that a black and decker several years back had been recalled due to a wiring issue. mom's number turned out to be ok but mine was a recall item. without sales receipt (and remembering where i bought it) i could only cut the cord (black and decker recommendation) so it couldn't be reused and toss it.
I have a 20+ year-old deLonghi toaster oven that has been a workhorse! Small kitchen and small household, so it does triple duty for toasting, baking and broiling.
I've had better luck with cheap toasters vs the more expensive ones. Probably fewer things to go wrong? The best, longest lasting toaster I've used was one we picked up for $3 over 15 years ago in Wal-Mart on black Friday. My parents are still using it.
My 30 year old Black and Decker(?)toaster oven is used once to twice every day. Toasting, reheating myriad things, roasting a small amount of potatoes;I totally depend on it! If it ever stopped working, I would comb garage sales for another just like it.
