Can the mashed yams portion of a yam casserole be made the night before?

I'm trying to save myself stress while cooking Christmas and was wondering if I could prepare the yams the night before, then top and bake htem just befoe serving.

If you mean boil or bake and hold in fridge, yes you can do them several days in advance. Your idea to top and bake just before serving will give you better taste and texture than doing that part days in advance.
