Can I substitute a sturdier lentil in this recipe? French/black?

I don't know what the author would say, but I would counsel against it. Orange lentils a quite a bit different - more delicate - than the sturdier lentils.

Thanks June! Was thinking of doing 1/2 orange 1/2 green to make it a bit toothier (I prefer it), but agree!
