The lid won't fit on the electric roaster, do i cover with foil or can i remove the insert pan and cook on that, as long as we raise the bird?

I wouldn't remove the insert, in case of burning, and there seem to be mixed opinions about using foil in place of the lid.

Erica, have you considered spatchcocking (butterflying) the turkey so that it will fit?
