Canned vs dried chipotle peppers

If I use dried chipotle peppers for this recipe, do I need to reconstitute the dried peppers with some water before "chopping into a paste"?

It's a good idea- you could pulverize them in the blender or use powdered chipotle if you really don't want to soak them. I should warn you that this will be blazing hot with four whole chipotles- you might want to seed them and remove the veins if your tolerance isn't high.

Yes.
If you go back to the headnote, you'll see the recipe is also made more often with dried....so you'll get traditional (if not better) flavor.
Reconstitute with a some hot or boiling water, let sit a while, drain & chop.
