Ice Cream in Alaska, Hawaii and the 48 contiguous States

Karen Lo's article about the most popular ice cream was interesting (https://food52.com/blog...). However, she wrote, "Outside of the continental U.S., Alaska prefers chocolate..."

Does Karen (or her editor) not realize that Alaska is part of North America? Canada and 49 U.S. States are part of North America.

Not really a hotline subject, but I suppose "Outside the 48 contiguous states" would have been a better phrasing. I have considerable doubts about the amount of influence editors have over internet postings.
