Yes, you can use frozen apple chunks here. Take the frozen apples out of the freezer and put them on a metal baking sheet; let them sit for about 15 minutes, and then flip the package over and let them sit for another 15 minutes, or longer, if you have the time.
You could also put the frozen apples in the microwave for about 2 minutes. You don't need all the pieces to be totally thawed, all the way through.
