Parsnips yum! Is buttermilk essential for the spice cake?

During these times of social distancing I have found that I need to be flexible and imaginative with my ingredients. When baking though, I feel I need to ask advice. Is the buttermilk in the recipe necessary? Is there something that could be used instead? Looking forward to trying this recipe!
