I would like to make this ahead of time as we will be transporting to a friends house

You could definitely make ahead through step 6, toasting the rice. Any further along and I would be afraid you could lose the al dente texture of the final dish. I would measure and prep all the ingredients and package up as needed so they are ready to be added when called for.
