the cake part of the Boston Cream Pie???

How would this cake be for the cake-part of the Boston Cream pie? It would have to be in round cake pans.

Hmm. Maybe use 2 8 inch round cake pans instead of the one 8 inch square cake pan that is used in recipe. However, since a Boston Cream Pie needs to be refrigerated due to the pastry cream filling, cake will be a bit hard unless you let it come to room temperature. I myself might prefer to instead use an oil based cake.
