BEST way is to open windows and/or doors to create a cross draft. Then grab a dish towel and swing it around in a propeller motion above your head to get the air moving through the cross draft. I have to do this ALL the time to clear the air whenever I oven roast meats or do high-heat-sautes, because my smoke alarm goes absolutely BONKERS. To seal the deal, light a stick of incense at the end of the evening. The house will smell lovely the next morning.

Still these work for cabbage? That's even worse, to me!

Diffuse "Purification Essential Oil" from Young Living.. it is really very effective...

Same as Lori and HalfPint recommend. Also:
Boil a cut half or whole lemon in some water in the kitchen.
Use other air freshener or purifying system like plug in, scented burner like Lampe Berger, periodic spray.
Last, when possible, don't cook the fish long. Just enough time on the heat.

"Periodic spray" may be unclear. There are commercial sprays in battery powered holder that you can set to spray automatically at your chosen rate (often, sometimes, rarely).

Another way is to boil 1 cup of water and a couple tablespoons of vinegar, along with any spices or citrus peel you may like. Then while it is steaming, you can walk through your house wafting the steam through the air. Or simply leave it simmer on the stove for a while. As far as spices, pumpkin pie spice is nice, or pickling spice, or cinnamon sticks. You can also add in a teaspoon of extract, or drops of essential oil- your choice of fragrance.

Open windows and air out the house, if possible. Take a degreaser and wipe down kitchen counters, cabinets, and walls around the cooking area. Mop the floor, if possible. Wash any fabrics (like curtains, chair cushions, tablecloths, etc) or spray with Febreze.
