Can unsweetened chestnut puree be used in place of the whole chestnuts?

The puree is quite dense. I have had no luck with dried either. Vacuum packed are readily available, but the country of origin is not Europe.

I would only be worried that a puree will make the filling too runny and that will make this difficult to make. Can you get dried chestnuts? They can be rehydrated and mashed.
