They don’t last long but nothing will fill your house with a beautiful scent and memories like lilacs, peonies & iris.

I take back my previous reply. I’m going with peonies (thanks for the reminder MMH :)

You are so kind. I grew up in the Midwest. Peonies always bloomed around Memorial Day. (Decoration Day as my Grandmother called it. She was born in 1900.) We took coffee cans full of them to the cemetery. Last week we walked in to a cafe in Christiansted, St Croix and it was filled with peonies and the scent brought back all those memories. Last place I expected to find them.

Ah, Decoration Day. My parents, born around 1920, used to call it that too. When the retired moved from their house to a condo in Pittsford, NY there was a small cemetery mostly for Revolutionary War soldiers. It was decorated every spring with lovely red flowers, I forget what kind, but maybe were they peonies?

The very light pink peonies are my fave. They make me think of ballerinas because they're so frilly and beautiful.

I don't think Decoration Day is a thing here in New England. At least I'm not familiar with it. But we do have Bunker Hill Day to make up for it :)

Looked this up after writing. It is 81 Civil War soldiers who are buried in this cemetary.

Thanks so much for sharing these flowers and memories—and of course peonies, lilacs and iris are all so beautiful.

We know you ultimately went with peonies—but certainly another great option!
