What is the best way to store onions and potatoes in a pantry with a door?

I keep the bulk of my potatoes and onions in as cool, dark and area as possible (walk-out basement), but do keep several of both in a basket on my kitchen island so I will remember to use them!

Both store best in a dark, well-ventilated area so any open box or crate. This is why both produce are often sold in mesh bags.

However, potatoes emit ethylene gas which accelerates the spoilage of onions so it is best to keep those two well separated.
