Thank you Nancy. Yes--if you use white sesame you won't get the same depth of flavor or nutty taste. I would look out for unhulled sesame seeds which are brown and have a deeper flavor since their skins are on.
The color of the cake won't be as good. There are plenty of different variations in my book using different flavors and nuts if want more options.

You an use white/golden sesame seeds instead of the black ones, and the cake will taste good...but not quite the same, as the two sesame seeds have slightly different taste profiles (white is milder).
By the way, if you are having trouble finding black sesame seeds at a regular grocery, look for them at an Indian grocery (if there is one near you) or online.
