Agree with creamtea and drbabs. Just another idea - maybe use 2-3 tsp of a syrup similar to malt syrup to give some of that sugary, caramelized flavor but not disturb the proportions. Molasses, rice bran syrup, maple syrup are options.
Malted milk powder is sometimes added to cakes, pancakes and other baked goods to give a malty rounded flavor. or heighten the chocolatey flavor. https://www.seriouseats.com/what-is-malted-milk-powder If you don't have it available you could probably just leave it out, since there are already crushed malted milk balls called for to decorate the cake.
I was wondering the same thing, and I think I’d do one of two things, depending on what you have at home. I usually have nonfat milk powder in the house, so I’d probably use that. If I didn’t, I’d just use an extra 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
