Do you place the entire halved butternut squash on top of the kale/leek filling? Its not cut into slices?

According to the ingredient list, step 4 and step 8, yes.
But/and if you like the idea of slices, remember that you can slice through the whole thing - pastry, squash, kale filling - when you serve.
