How do I make a soft-boiled egg?

For a white that’s just set & a runny yolk. Place 1-3 eggs submerged in water. Turn to high heat uncovered until the water comes to a simmer. Cover, turn off heat and set a timer for 3 minutes. Drain & rinse with cool water to stop the cooking.

Takes about the same amount of time and we get our info the same way that you do. But it is info specific to our own kitchens.

That said, Serious Eats has instructions for "perfect soft-boiled egg": large eggs, 6 minutes at a gentle simmer. It's one of the first few results on Google.

It comes down to the size of the eggs.

Julia Child covers this in her classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961).

She says:

US Large eggs - 6 min.
Extra Large eggs - 6.5 min.
Jumbo - 7 min.

Add an extra minute of cooking time for chilled eggs.
