Should I double the recipe to get a thicker cake to serve to company?

On rereading your question, maybe it isn’t more VOLUME you want, but more PRESENCE you want, for a cake for company.
In that case, still avoid a thicker cake (difficult to manage), and go for one or more garnishes - lemon glaze, dusting of confectioner sugar, fresh berries, fresh flowers, ice cream or whipped cream.

If you need more cake, better to bake two cakes of the original size. Or maybe a rectangular pan, or a tube pan.
All those options will allow you to maintain same depth of batter, baking times and expected results.
A deeper, thicker cake may not cook through, may collapse or overflow its baking pan.
