Putting Whole Cardamom pods in cake

Are you supposed to do anything to the whole cardamom pods before you put them in the batter? I just put them in whole because and someone almost broke a tooth. Are they meant to be eaten or spat out?

The handling of the cardamom pods is poorly explained in this recipe. Crush the decorticated seeds next time. There shouldn't be any seed chomping or spitting necessary.

Oh, how awful!
In the ingredient list, there are some directions. Here are more.
If you make the cake again, use:
1) either already-ground spice.
2) Or remove the black seeds from the cardamom pods and crush them (mortar and pestle, other heavy object) or grind them (coffee grinder or similar).
