Since tomatoes are not good in winter,what canned options would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

For this recipe in winter. I would use top quality frozen, boxed (tetra pak) or even canned tomatoes.
Cheat’s trick- sometimes I make tomato soup from a can of sauce, milk or cream, a spoon of butter.

One review of canned tomatoes recommends as best tasting those without calcium chloride and with tomato purée, but I haven’t confirmed this yet with buying and tasting. In a pinch, get a brand you’ve had and liked.

Glad you have a winter source of good canned tomatoes. Remember the freezer (which often has higher quality than fresh) if you can't find what you want. And as backup, the boxed tomatoes, especially those from Italy.

What`s the difference between boxed and canned tomatoes besides the obvious? Does the box make the tomatoes better? BTW I have never seen frozen tomatoes in the freezer section.

From latest I read, box (Tetra Pak) doesn’t have chemicals bps or bpa, which are in many or most cans. And which many consumers have been avoiding for years.
Also, I’ve seen tomatoes from Italy (usually both very fine tasting and a little more expensive) in the boxes, but not in the cans.
Your choice, based on taste, availability, cost, packing chemicals

Tetra Paks are lined with polyethelene a so called "good plastic" and is considered an improvement over bpa which are everywhere.90% of us have bpa in our body.No doubt restaurant`s are using products containing bpa and other plastics.Products packed in glass are the safest.

I use crushed tomatoes because they don't have calcium chloride like others. Makes a real difference

Calcium Chloride occurs naturally in sea salt which is what is used in the canning process.
