Pretty sure, by the way the instructions are written, that the buttermilk is liquid, and not powder: "Add vanilla and melted chocoate-coffee mixture. Add flour mixture, alternating with buttermilk, stirring after each addition." Alternating wet and dry ingredients is typical in baking a cake.
