Are there different rose waters?

I haven't made these in 30 years, so I was excited to try again. I have a question about the rose water since this was my first time buying it. Are there different kinds? I ordered a bottle from King Arthur and it was way too overpowering. I threw the cake away. I didn't even use the full amount called for in the recipe. Thank you!

Certainly there are different brands of rose water and without a doubt differences in flavor/aroma profile, strength, price, etc.

Unless someone like Serious Eats or America's Test Kitchen has done a tasting, you're probably going to have to guess.

Your local gourmet market might carry rose water but it is likely that there will only be one: you won't have a choice.

Personally, I'd probably buy whatever is locally available from a market I trust rather than hunt down a particular brand. Of course, if I ran a commercial bakery, I'd probably be more inclined to find a specific product for consistency but that doesn't make as much sense for the home baker.

For sure, I would lean toward a European manufacturer since rose water is more commonly used in European desserts. Americans don't seem to gravitate to this particular flavor profile.

Best of luck.
