Scottish substitution Four basic tomato sauce

My husband and I are in Scotland for a few months. I am planning a luncheon and thought I would serve tomato basil soup. My recipe and I love starts with tomato sauce.. Come to find out there is no such thing in the UK. They have just about every other form of canned tomato anything. What would be a good substitution?

Easy…get some canned or bottled tomatoes, or crushed ones.
If whole, crush with potato masher or blend in a machine
Heat uo with some sautéed chopped vegetable for flavor (for example, celery onion carrot garlic), a bit of olive oil or butter, some broth, when heated and to taste, season with salt and pepper, garnish with fresh herbs and serve.

Thank you. And thank you to anyone reading this for overlooking my typos, at least one of which I'll blame on Siri! :)

PS
Cream of tomato version - same use of tomatoes, vegetables and butter or oil for seasoning.
But you can use milk or cream instead of some of the broth. Add it at the end to warm through, but watch it so it doesn’t boil over.

Last idea…if you plan from the start to make cream of tomato soup, change the order. Make a roux (butter and flour(, add milk to make a bechamel sauce, then sautéed or chopped vegetable, chopped or puréed tomato, seasonings.

Thanks for all you interested and ideas, Nancy. Scotland sells this product called passata. Apparently it's not 100% the same as tomato sauce, but it certainly worked well for my recipe.

Glad to help and glad you found passata (tomato puree, not sauce). FYI and others who may need it it's available in many countries.
