Is there a substitute for rum if you don’t have it?

Another idea or direction. If you not only don't have rum around, but don't like it (so don't want to buy any version of it), consider using a liqueur instead....something that goes with bananas and/or that you like a lot. Examples - orange or coffee liqueur.
If going this route, I would use that same volume as the recipe called for in rum.
But then reduce the sugar amount in the recipe a little bit, as the liqueur will be sweeter than the original rum.

They make rum flavoring for those who prefer not to drink or keep alcohol about the house. Though it would change the flavor profile of the dish, you could also use bourbon. Otherwise, in all honesty, there just isn't a good sub for a quality dark rum. You could omit it entirely- as some do make Bananas Foster without alcohol at all, and make up the difference with something like pineapple juice.
