It's the hard outside layer of a grain. White rice, pearled barley, and other refined grains usually have the bran, husk, and germ removed. The bran is very fibrous, which is why white rice tastes a bit lighter than brown. It's also why bran is sold on its own as a health food.

Dang it double post....but I think I just found my Halloween costume this year, I just need a Whole Foods t-shirt, and say "BRAAANS" or "GRAAAINS" alot.
