Wonki Ware
South Africa
Based in South Africa, Wonki Ware has been handcrafting eye-popping pottery for over 20 years. Every platter and dish that comes from the studio is slab-rolled from local South African clay, pressed with lace or painted to give it a standout pattern, left to dry in the sun, and hand-glazed and kiln-fired for a shiny finish. (It’s a process that takes no less than 15 sets of hands.) They’re employing about 80 locals from disadvantaged backgrounds, whose skills give their pottery its wonderfully organic—and yes, slightly wonky—looks.
