3 Things to Pick Up at the Market This Weekend

June 14, 2014

Here at Food52, we like to talk about what we’re buying at the market: what’s new, what’s exciting, the market's best finds. This is our water cooler talk. And now, we want you to join in.

3 Things to Pick Up at the Market This Weekend

Food52 team members are headed to our local farmers markets for herb starts to round out our windowsill gardens, and dried lavender for baking and adorning our kitchens. But one cannot live on lavender cookies alone, so here's what else we can’t wait to pick up from the market this week -- and why you should be adding it to your bag, too.

3 Things to Pick Up at the Market This Weekend, from Food52

Strawberries
We know it doesn’t take any convincing from us to head home with a pint (or two or three), but after a slow start, strawberry season is in full swing, and we’re all excited about eating our weight in berries this weekend. Start gearing up for Wimbledon and simply drown a bowl of them in cream. Then follow Marian’s lead and make schlumpf, or popsicles and strawberry juice, as Merrill plans to do.

Fava Leaves
Exactly what they sound like, these are the top few inches of of the plant -- think pea shoots -- and you can use them the same way too. Add them to a salad, give them a quick sauté, or garnish everything on your plate.

Garlic Scapes
If you aren’t familiar with scapes, they are the stems of hard-neck garlic, plucked before it has a chance to flower. We put them in frittatas and use them as skewers on the grill, and the community has a slew of ideas for using them, too.

What are you picking up this week? Tell us in the comments!

I spend every Saturday morning at my Farmer's Market. I take a picture and post it at Foodismyzen.com. With the cost. To support local and to make people aware that it is not expensive and that it lasts longer.

And blueberries! Our local blueberries are so good, juicy, and sweet right now! Have already made pancakes, cream cheese pound cake, and buttermilk pound cake--all preceded by "blueberry".

Definitely picked up strawberries from NJ - I did see fava leaves, but more importantly the fava beans themselves finally arrived in our market. In warmer places they're usually long finished for the season by now. They're still quite tender so you can eat them raw out of the pod!

Being on the west coast the offerings are a bit different. We're looking forward to picking up raspberries, cherry tomatoes, peaches and corn today. So excited!
