The Most Adorable Food-Related Pet Names

July 15, 2016

Kitchens, kittens—the words are so similar, it makes sense that our Food52 community is interested in both!

Sunday, am I right?

A photo posted by sarahjampel (@sarahjampel) on

This is Mochi, who has the perfect food-related name.

Still, I was joyfully overwhelmed with your responses when I asked in not one but two Hotline threads (sorry, technical glitch) for your help naming my future kitten.

  1. What food-related name should I give my kitten?
  2. What food-related name should I give my kitten (the simultaneous sequel)?

Besides being related to food, my other requirements include that the name...

  • Is highly adorable
  • Is appropriate for a male cat
  • Is easily nicknamed and punned on
  • Can be inserted naturally into song lyrics (I plan to serenade my cat—a lot)
  • Makes me seem really clever (because this cat is about me, am I right?!)

And BerryBaby shared some insight from an article she read on pet names:

First, the name should be one or two syllables in length, it should not be a name/word they hear everyday and the best advice? It should be a name that makes YOU smile when you say it.

We also turned to Twitter, where over 750 people cast a vote. (Let it be known that Bippity-Boop is my first-choice cat name: I realize that it is not food-related, but I feel its other qualities compensate for that one shortcoming. Unfortunately, Bippity-Boop has been vetoed by my future cat co-parent.)

Small typo: Lamb—not lamp—Chop.

Noodles is a strong contender (and "the only correct choice" according to shitfoodblogger), but also the name of a cat I already know. Below, I've collected all of the best suggestions and starred my favorites.

I will meditate on the options, consult the aforementioned future cat co-parent, and come to a decision. Stay tuned!

And if you find yourself in the market for a pet name, the list above is a great place to start.

“I think you have to get the kitten first, then decide what name he/she should be. By her looks, coloring or personality. There are many good choices on your list. I love babka, panko and kugel. All short easy names. As a chef, my pets have always had food names. Our present one, a rescue brittany is Coco Cannoli. She looks like the filling with chocolate chips. Or nicknamed Cockamamie, or Kookamonga, or Cocoa Puff, or hey Puff, she ignores me at those. A friend named her little dog Taco, which is perfect as he could fit in one. And another chef friend named his pet goat Cabrito which is a goat dish. A cat though deserves something more regal I think. ”

I used to work at Food52. I'm probably the person who picked all of the cookie dough out of the cookie dough ice cream.

Ah this is so cute. I’m late to this but mochi is the cutest name. My cat has a first name and a hyphened middle name lol. Took so much thought.

Corduval April 18, 2019
It's a little late to comment, but I have to mention the name a friend gave his huge black lab -
Albondigas! ...that's a Mexican meatball

NCdana February 18, 2019
Our cat is named Ceci - Italian for chick pea. She curled into a perfect tiny golden ball as a kitten. (pronounced chay-chee with accent on 1st syllable)

patb January 31, 2019
I don't see Waffles on the list. It's the name of Dianne Keaton's dachshund in Annie Hall. Always loved that as a pet name for the right beast.

Tamami January 3, 2019
My cat's name is Odango, meaning sweet dumpling in Japanese. Her head looked like a dumpling when she was a kitten.

Katherine January 3, 2019
Love it. Don't understand how none of my kitties got foodie names. The closest is Twinkie but her full name is Twinklebelle. As she gets older I call her Chunkie Monkey for obvious reasons. Could just call her Chunkie in honor of a candy I ate as a child. I think next time I adopt a kitty I will have to be conscious of what I love most in life when I come up with a name.

Katherine January 3, 2019
P.S. Am trying to imagine a kitten who's head looks like a dumpling.

Tamami January 3, 2019
Japanese sweet dumplings are round balls!

Lydia D. August 3, 2018
Commenting late, as Facebook just rolled this onto my feed -- I met a kitten named 'Garbanzo' at the shelter and while it broke my own rule of two syllables or less (must be easily sung or shouted depending on mood!), I've always thought it charming and adorable.

Mashael A. July 30, 2018
Poke, Waffle, Pancake or Eggo! (my kitty is called Nugget)

Jane C. July 29, 2018
We just named our new Russian Blue (grey) kitten Poppy since she is the colour of poppyseeds and our Sealpoint Siamese kitten Latte. 😀

marianne July 29, 2018
Okay but: WAFFLES

Sarah B. July 29, 2018
I named one of my kitties Mr. Biscuit and another Giblet.

kate July 29, 2018
Chiming in late, but this article just popped up on my FB feed. Our kitty is SugarButter—Sugar for short or just Shoogy or sometimes SugarFatty because she has a fluffy belly.
Lentil is a great name though! Or Olive.

Laurie March 11, 2018
We rescued an adorable munchkin orange tabby that I wanted to name Cornbread but my son named him Boots! Our Havanese dog is Biscuit!

CFrance March 11, 2018
@Laurie, I loooooooooooove those names!

Laurie March 11, 2018
I had a female Maine coon cat Named MoonPie and a male named Bubba Grits! I miss them!

S L. March 6, 2018
With so many dumpling based names, I'm shocked nobody went Korean with Mandu. After looking at your list, I think my next cat NEEDS that name! :)

Sarah J. August 30, 2016
Hi everyone! We chose Plum. :) Thank you for all of your help and inspiration!!! I love the Food52 community.

Jane C. August 10, 2016
Our 17 yr old black cat is called Nori and her 17 yr old tabby BFF is called Sake. Their predecessor was called Sushi.

Kristina C. July 28, 2016
I think Biscuit is cute.
Or Nutmeg (not sure if that's too feminine?)
Perhaps Caesar, after my fav salad?

Katherine July 29, 2016
I had a red (auburn) Newfoundland girl named Nutmeg. Of course she became Maggie.

Anja July 27, 2016
It's true that names can change over the years. My best friend had a little rat dog when I met her in high school, lo these many years ago, who started out as Snoopy, but morphed into Noops, then Nips, and finally Nipper. Much more appropriate for a little rat-dog. I think only beagles can really be named Snoopy :) But enough about dogs.... Sorry!

Katherine July 27, 2016
Well, I love Pickles and Semifreddo. My kitties always develop nicknames as they grow (and change from my from my dreams into who they are -- as in babies!) so Pickles might be hard to transform. So for a male, Semifreddo could become Freddie, but Pickles to Picky? Hmmm. I currently have Rambo, who was previously Rascal (transforming from cute and naughty to bully), and is now Ramboni Macaroni; Sigmund Freud who is always Siggie; Molly the Moo who is Molly, and Twinklebell who is Twinkie or Twinkles. We had Huckleberry who became Huckster (really a love) and Emily who became the Divine Miss Em -- among others. I agree -- that names need to be nicka-ble.

Andrea I. July 27, 2016
Pick-nick?

Urszula M. July 27, 2016
our youngest cat is called Figa (fig), but on account of the fact that he likes to sleep in pots we are naming her for Ms Bulion

Elissa B. July 26, 2016
We have a litter of five kittens, long story, that we ended up keeping all of them. Two black ones and three grey.
The female black, who happens to be the biggest now that they are grown is named Kalamata! Like the black Greek olives...she loves her name and we love saying it!

Sharon July 25, 2016
I had two chocolate colored dogs, one a Basset/Labrador mix I named Gumbo (as we lived in Louisiana and he was a mix) then when we got our chocolate Labradoodle it was just obvious to name her Roux.

Nomnomnom July 25, 2016
I already contributed suggestions in the hotline thread—but can't stop. Since then, it became clear that there is only one choice. Keanu!

kelly July 25, 2016
My cat's name is Pickles Elizabeth, ( cause you need two names when you are so naughty, as we all have experienced when our own mothers barked at us with our first and middle names-we knew we were in trouble then)

Chelsea July 25, 2016
I named my first cat yamstick(which was a brand and type of Japanese potato chips). I was mocked by all of my friends for doing so. Nice to see that there are other people who believe in food naming pets. Go pickles and Soba!

connie M. July 25, 2016
One of my cats was born in an "I" year (93). My husband wanted to register him as Idaho and call him "Spud" for short. Cute, but not for a cat from France!

Sasha S. July 25, 2016
My first horse's racing name was Barbequed Bunny. I will never name an animal after anything edible.

Debbie July 25, 2016
It took us a l o n g time to agree on a name for our male kitten. I'd always liked Masala, but we finally settled on Tikka. (Well that was close to my original choice, aka Tikka Masala).

Fred K. July 24, 2016
Three of our cats have had food names, actually DRINK names (two teas and a milkshake) -- Keemun, Camellia and Jamocha. They were all sweet! And Siamese.

Andrea I. July 24, 2016
I have some friends who named their cat Furrito! Perfect in my opinion!

Julia July 24, 2016
I also have a long-standing requirement of naming my feline friends after favorite foods. This tradition has yet to let either me - or my animal companions - down. Our household today: Rhubarb (big, tart, orange), Scrapple (she is from PA...I just passed through), Roquefort (smelly...but good!), Ding Dong (ALMOST all black...with a tiny white tuft. Same composition as the Hostess(tm) treat!

Windischgirl July 24, 2016
My daughter suggests 'Muesli'...

Kathi P. July 24, 2016
I like "Gus" short for Asparagus ... that is what we called our last chameleon ... :)

Carla F. July 24, 2016
The best pet name all-round that I've ever come across started as a food name. A friend of mine named her kitten Squash, because of his color. As he grew huge and got in the habit of lounging on people and things, he became "Squash, the Verb" instead of "Squash, the Noun."

Suz July 24, 2016
For a long time I have wanted 2 schnauzers so I could call them Schnitzel and Struedel.

LULULAND July 24, 2016
I think for the schnauzers, Pretzel would be cute too!

Leslie H. July 24, 2016
CAT
Chocolate
Almond
Truffle
Or Fiddlehead (fern salad)

connie M. July 24, 2016
I am not really into cutesy names for pets. My friend had two Persians named Martini and Rossi. She now has Jaguar (Bengal) and Bentley (American Curl). My Chartreux and Persian had more conventional names determined by their breed requirements. I think Campbell (soup) would be a consideration.

kareema July 24, 2016
A cat needs a full title, tho, not just "Truffles" or "Fido". For example, we had a cat (we miss you, Theo) named Theodolite (he was three-legged) the Galactic Wonder Cat. Another cat of ours was named "Annie the Fierce Bad Clawbeast".
You get my drift. So Noodles is a perfectly acceptable name (Soba. What about Soba?), but your cat wants and needs a title. "Soba the Honorable and High-Minded". Or if he's a pill, "Noodles the Sneaky Bacon Thief".

CFrance July 24, 2016
I like this! Our favorite cat (lived to age 20) was Fletcher. But aka Floppo the Wonder Cat. Other names grow into being as you live with your pet.

MaryJane M. July 24, 2016
NUTELLA - it screams an Italian song and delicious treat! We had a green parakeet named Kiwi!

LULULAND July 24, 2016
The beautiful black cat I rescued I named, "Java", I made it up, never heard it before!

Mary M. July 24, 2016
I do not see "Waffles" on the list. Please rectify that immediately.

Merry July 24, 2016
I loved the first year we saw a Christmas card from friends with their new cat added to their names, i.e., Tofu! Loved it!

Jo M. July 24, 2016
A friend has two sibling cats called Moet and Chandon..suits them purrfectly!

Natasha July 24, 2016
cupcake, clafoutis, brioche, creme brulee, cream, whip cream (whippy), sprinkle, gougere.

Lisa B. July 24, 2016
My cat is a black cat named Szechaun (as in pepper)!

Paulo M. July 24, 2016
My kitten is called Niscas, the short for Pataniscas which is a portuguese sort of dried cod fish dumpling. When these are cooked they should be very fluffy and display a beautiful variety of golden-brownish shades. My kitten could be described in just the same way :)

chefrockyrd July 24, 2016
So many wonderful suggestions coming in. Wow. I am now leaning towards Orzo.
Forgot to mention my last dog was Rocky Road, because he was so much like the ice cream. He was vanilla and chocolate, was soft as a marshmallow and he was NUTS!

CFrance July 24, 2016
I knew someone who got the most adorable chocolate spaniel puppy. The name just SCREAMED Truffles. But no! Her owner named her Maize. What the heck.

saltysuite July 24, 2016
CFrance - thank you!! You get it! Some pets pretty much name themselves, but some pet owners/adopters just miss it!

Penny H. July 24, 2016
My son's cat is called Oreo and my friend's orange tabby is called Pumpkin (she got him around Halloween).

saltysuite July 24, 2016
The names for orange cats could b cliche, but somehow they aren't: marmalade, ginger, ginger snap, pumpkin, etc. But "Tiger" is kind of outdated

AKOS July 24, 2016
Just petting one of our cats and realized we named him after an apple! Pippin

erin July 24, 2016
i have a siberian husky named yuzu ! favorite citrus to add to my baking and cocktails alike.

The P. July 24, 2016
I have a female tuxedo cat named Sweet Pea.

If a "yellow" dog or cat comes into my life I may bestow the name "Cornbread" upon them.

saltysuite July 24, 2016
Truffles was the best food-related name I've heard! Especially for a brownish Abyssinian. Works great for dogs, too.

JoanJ July 24, 2016
I had a perfectly wonderful Abyssinian named Remy. Hennessy was also under consideration. Cognac theme due to coat color.

Dbauk July 24, 2016
My cats from the same litter are Snickers, Hershey and Twix. Their mom's name was KitKat, short for kitty cat.

Michelle July 24, 2016
Oh- and my sister has a cat named Momo which basically means peach boy. You could try cute food names in another language!

Michelle July 24, 2016
A neighbor has a male cat named chocolate cake and I sing to it and it is the best name!! I also met a cat named egg. It isn't two syllables but is one of my favorite cat names of all time.

Noel M. July 24, 2016
How about Ramen or Soba since Noodles is taken. You could go Italian pasta with Orzo, Orecchieti (Chet for short) or Penne...

Anja July 24, 2016
My late cat, the cat of my heart, was called Chutney. She was a tortoiseshell so looked kind of like mango chutney, and had a beautiful sweet and spicy personality.

Antonia A. July 28, 2016
And, one must not forget the Legally Blond reference!

Catherine A. July 24, 2016
We got a barn cat from Grandma's farm when our kids were just learning to read. He was orange, so if course they named h
Cheerio. Cute, until he grew into an 18-lb mass of feline muscle who could jump to the top of a full-size frudge without effort!

CanCanEats July 24, 2016
Meatball! And Milkshake!

I once saw a dog named Wonton. His owner was yelling "goddammit Wonton! Get over here!" And everyone on the hiking trail was laughing hysterically. So that's always a nice effect.

Karin B. July 24, 2016
It seems most commenters go through a lot of pets. I get to name a cat once every 18 years.

CFrance July 24, 2016
We were never satisfied with just one pet. Came from college with two cats, into marriage with three. Seven altogether, along with four dogs, two at a time, down through 46 years of marriage. They all lived long lives except for two whose genetic illnesses did them in at ages 5 & 6.Enjoyed every single one! Oh, and two birds.

Windischgirl July 24, 2016
Gosh, just thought of another coworker who named her Rottie Beignet...Ben for short.

Erin H. July 24, 2016
The precious Pomeranian called Crumpet is no longer using the name, alas, so it's available. His official name was Napoleon (for being boss dog of his litter), but when my son introduced me to his new puppy who could stand in my hand, I told him, "That's not a general; it's a pastry," and tried the doglet out on names of that nature. He answered at once to Crumpet, clearly favoring it over Eclair, Popover and the rest of the array. Thus, he gained a second name and remained both Napoleon and Crumpet all his life.

Miki S. July 24, 2016
I have Ikura, the orange tabby, and Asari, the tuxedo - they are sisters (technically twins) and adorable!! I named them after learning a white cat named Toro and my friend's cat named Uni. Yes, sushi themed!!
My other friends have 2 brother cats and they named them Butter and Bacon. Yep.

thea G. July 24, 2016
My sister had two cats that she adopted they had been named Lima and Cocoa so I called them the bean kitties. When her new kitten came along I suggested Adzuki or Chickpea (Garbanzo if you wanted a continental flair)

Windischgirl July 24, 2016
Forgot about a coworker of Asian Indian heritage who named her Beagle Chutney...

Windischgirl July 24, 2016
My dog niece, a shepherd mix, is aptly named "Java"--certainly wired! My daughter named a friend's rescue chihuahua mix ”Noodles" (they were considering "Mogul" as a skiing reference, but it only brought to mind pretentious billionaires...).

Alletha July 24, 2016
My best friend had a black cat named Fudge. She also had Kahlua and Cointreau. I always liked the liquor names. Sambuca, Galliano, Amaretto, Limoncello, Midori, and Curacao. Don't just think edible, think drinkable, too.

Furbie G. July 24, 2016
I have a red female min pin . Her name is Chili I call her chili pepper or chili dog.

Deborah July 24, 2016
My French Bulldog is cream with pale lemon patches over her lower back. He name is Butterbean Ann (in the South one's middle name is invoked for various reasons). She's referred to as "The Bean."

Mendonoma July 24, 2016
my neighbor's dog is named Tater Tot....we all call him Taters. Their other dog is Rhubarb Pie or Ruby....

chefrockyrd July 24, 2016

Ours twin kitties have the best names...PeanutButter and Jelly!

Luc H. July 24, 2016
My son and his girlfriend named their two kittens...Gouda and Brie...and they both melt your heart. :)

AKOS July 24, 2016

"D" July 24, 2016
I have a very Handsome grey tabby short hair named "Basil" AND I know a strawberry female rescue in my neighborhood named "Jell-o"

Darlene July 21, 2016
Our Yorkie/Beagle mix is named Pistachio. She was a rescue along with her siblings Peanut and Pecan who were adopted before her. I planned on changing her name when we got her, but somehow, Pistachio just fit.

PHIL July 21, 2016
A Yorkie/ beagle mix, I think that would be a Yorgle HA? does it howl? I have 2 beagles and they like to howl

Darlene July 24, 2016
Yes- she howls, esp. when she hears emergency vehicle sirens. She looks like a yorkie but her ears hang down like a beagle!

Lori July 20, 2016
I named my female cat "Biscuit" because she was always making biscuits in my lap. Then I named my male cat "Alfalfa" only so I could call him "Alfie," but it sometimes morphs into "Alpha" when he is acting pushy. I wanted to keep with a food theme, too!

Desiree D. July 20, 2016
We have named our pets Saffron, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, jellybean, jaffa, Sweet Pea, and my current kitty is Teaspoon!

vvvanessa July 19, 2016
I used to have an orange cat named Ebi, which is Japanese for "shrimp." His jet-black sister is Nori, like the seaweed. I now have another black cat named Ika Sumi, which is Japanese for "squid ink."

bookjunky July 19, 2016
My Great Pyrenees is named Schnecken which is a kind of sweet roll. And he is very sweet.

Jennifer July 18, 2016
Our tortie is named Java. Bean is also cute!

CFrance July 18, 2016
My friend has a female Portuguese Water Dog, Lollipop. Lolli for short. My other friend has named her dogs after pasta. Bucatini is her current guy.

Sheri C. July 18, 2016
My daughter just named her kitten Pepita.

HRH July 18, 2016
My daughter has a knack for food named pets! There were Marie Cheerio, Muffin, Espresso (all hamsters), and her latest is Olive, the ferret. She also briefly named our lab Peanut, but he ended up with a human name.

Aliwaks July 18, 2016
I like Pepe, ALOT the nugget, then Alfredo (our bird is called Alfred)-- our cats have "Human names" Jerry, Hank and Farrah Faucet - which I suppose could be kitchen related though it refers to the faucet in the bathroom, where she lived for her first few days with us.

Es July 18, 2016
Used to work in an animal shelter where there was a name generator to help name pets in such a way that people would adopt them. Food names were big hits, both using the name generator (for lost pets) and pets relinquished by owners that already had names. Fun names were: Umami, Butter, Pancake, Sushi/sashimi, Gyoza, Meatloaf, Noodle(s), Bacon, Betty (as in Apple Brown Betty), Martini, Stoli, Turbinado, Allspice, Pumpkin, Clove, Lollipop, Peaches/Cream, any variety of tomato....e.g Krim, Zebra, etc, Cucumber, Celery, Brie, Cheddar, Comte, Toblerone, Yoo-hoo, Bosco, Ovaltine.....and so many more

Jun July 17, 2016
I had a friend who had a cat named Madam Gravy. He was also going to get a dog and call it Breakfast. Two of the greatest names ever.

Bobbi July 17, 2016
Our cat is named Pepper.
And I've always wanted to name a small pet, Loaf.
Like a loaf of bread.
I love this thread. Thanks Sarah!

Amanda S. July 17, 2016
I love the name Loaf!

PHIL July 17, 2016

Applesauce, my adorable long haired chihuahua Granddog.

Hillary R. July 17, 2016
My yellow lab is named Jelly. We have a French bulldog who lives next door named Pizza.

Angelina M. July 16, 2016
I have a rescue dog named Flapjack. I didn't like the name and wanted to change it but my kids insisted the dog should be allowed to keep his name. It's grown on me and it really does suit him.

CFrance July 18, 2016
I love that name! I'm glad your kids won out.

Liz D. July 16, 2016
I had a Fig Newton (Figgy for short) when I was a kid. Now we have a black kitty named Truffle and a cream tabby called Creamsicle (a.k.a. By-tor, Destroyer of Venetian Glass and Fine Linens)

Michelle M. July 16, 2016
My male kitty is named Toastie. Technically, he was named Tostada, but we only ever call him by the nickname, so it kinda morphed.

Nikita July 16, 2016
Toastie is an adorable kitty name!

BerryBaby July 16, 2016
At 1:15am this morning I awoke with this name screaming at me....PEANUT! As in "My cute little Peanut!"

Sean R. July 16, 2016

Thanks but I have one fluff ball that I adore and a furry feathered friend.

Alexandra K. July 16, 2016
Our dog's name is Dosa, but I believe this name is species neutral. Some people get a real chuckle out of it.

Mariù July 16, 2016
When I was 10 we found what was later to become my first cat on the side of a road, she was tiny and I got to name her Briciola, the Italian equivalent for crumb. We also often play with the name and called her Braciola, which stands for pork chop. This was often shortnened in Bra. Oh the innocent times when I didn't know much English! :)

BerryBaby July 16, 2016
It's 1:15am and I was awaken with this name...PEANUT! As in 'My little Peanut!'

For a boy cat, how about Al Fresco

Bobbi July 17, 2016

Thanks to everyone -- and especially Sarah. Fun. We had a cat named Cheesecake (a Siamese; name picked by our then five year old because of coloring). Our cats now are Edward Fitzgerald (Ed or Eddy) and his sister Kennedy. In this political season, I might have picked Clinton for a boy,Hillary for his sister.
In any case, congratulations to Sarah and to the soon-to-be gorgeous furry creature.

louisez July 15, 2016
That should be soon-to-be-named gorgeous creature

Lynn July 15, 2016
We love food names for our pets. Our cat is Zucchini, our dog is Raisin and the parakeet is Honeydew.

Oat&Sesame July 15, 2016
I'm partial to Sesame. Too bad about Bippity-Boop. :) maybe Bibimbap? I've had a Rootbeer and a Sushi. Naming kitties is so fun!

Fairmount_market July 15, 2016
I was going to suggest Bibimbap as well.

Erin J. July 15, 2016
I have a two-year old cat named Falafel. His name came to us in a moment of inspiration -- it wasn't even on the list of potential names that we'd been maintaining.

Stasia July 15, 2016
I lobbied to name our pug/chi Tater Tot. Alas, the kids went with Daisy.

Elle July 15, 2016
Truffle, that is the name of our cat. She's a naughty little mushroom

A friend of mine had a dog named Sabayon (Saby for short). On another note, think a good name for a female cat would be Pepita.

Ann K. July 15, 2016
We got a cat last year and named her Pepita!

Ann K. July 15, 2016
And the other is Grisette. Also a food name. But this wasn't on purpose.

Susan B. July 15, 2016
:) so cute

Kristen M. July 15, 2016
As you might know, my first best friend was Shrimp the cat, so I am partial to Scampi. I love this list and this conversation! Food52ers' cats had such delightful names!

Kristen M. July 15, 2016
Have! Have delightful names!

Diane M. July 15, 2016
Cheddar ? And Colby Jack ?

Frederique M. July 15, 2016
My cat is called clafoutis, the favourite word of my son at that moment. She is indeed a sweet one !

caninechef July 15, 2016
And then there are the unfortunate names of 2 steers I heard about a while back, Sir Loin and Chuck. Good advice is to never name your food.

Emma L. July 15, 2016
This list is amazing... I'm digging Ponzu and Kugel! My cat is named Butter. (When she's being bad, we call her, "Margarine.") She was almost: Anchovy, or Miso, or Wasabi.

Diane M. July 15, 2016
I love the Butter and Margarine comment?

Michael M. July 15, 2016
Panko is a great name for a cat

I know a sandy-colored standard poodle named Waffles and it is my favorite ever.

BerryBaby July 15, 2016
Thank you for passing along the information I provided on naming your pet. What is interesting is I have a dog, she has a great name, but many times I get caught up in her cuteness and call her:
Pumpkin, Cookie Pie, Fluff Muffin, Sweetie Pie, Cookie Buns, Dumpling, Cuddly Duddly, Nugget, Tootsie Pie, Rag-a-muffin, My Little Darling, Cutie Padooti, Dolly Girl, Angel, Lover Dover, Fluffer Nutter... She answers to all of them, but I do think she knows her 'real' name, it's Sophie.

alicia July 15, 2016
My black Bombay is named Basil; thus named when a Prego spaghetti sauce commercial came on one night.

Melanie July 15, 2016
I often name kittens for a rescue organization so will happily steal some of these!

Lucy N. July 15, 2016
I think Crumpet is adorbs.
My cat came to me named Tansy - botanical rather than food per se, but her nickname is Pumpkin, often shortened to Punkin or merely Punky...when appropriate. Since she is a Siamese, that is OFTEN.
I also think Zephyr is a great name (and person!) although not a foodie name.

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there’s the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey —
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter —
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that’s particular,
A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkstrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum —
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover —
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Personally, I think Noodles is a great everyday name. But I also love Ponzu. And Couscous.

Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is delightful and offers up the name Asparagus (Gus) for food/cat lovers! (And, of course, hurrah for CATS- such fun)

I love food-related names for animals! My husband and I decided we would name our future cats Appam and/or Idli. Mochi is also adorable. Basically anything rice related, I suppose.

Sarah J. July 15, 2016
Idli!! I love that. What about uttapam?

Greta W. July 15, 2016
While not actually a food name, I think this name is food related and so clever...my friend has a rabbit named Julia Child.

Jackie July 15, 2016
My cats are named Graham and Crackers - brother and sister

PHIL July 15, 2016
BTW, extra bonus , Noodles was a gangster played by De Niro in "Once upon a time in America" It's a good New York name. When you call him like this: Ay Noodles get ova here , How you doin ?

Emily July 15, 2016
One of my favorite cats was a half-siamese named Sushi. I wanted to get a companion for him and name him Saki, but our next cat was not exotic enough to be a Saki so he was dubbed Simpson.

loribailey July 15, 2016

While in culinary school I decided that Bechamel would be a great name for a white cat and Veloute for a light tawny one. However, the cats who keep coming into my life tend to be tuxedos & tigers.
