This made me emotional. Long live grandmothers and their eternal recipes. Thank you for sharing such a special story.

I have tears in my eyes reading this. My parents were killed in a car accident last year and among their possessions I found a cookbook my dad had started with some of their signature dishes—pumpkin cake, maple candy, fruit cake. Last year I was too raw to try any of these but I just harvested my pumpkins and am looking forward to trying his pumpkin cake recipe. He had mostly written his recipes—what’s missing is my mom’s dinner roll recipe (lovingly known as “Grandma’s Buns”). I did attempt them last year at Thanksgiving but missed the mark. Maybe I’ll get it right next time.

Beautiful story of how grief and baking go hand in hand for many of us. I look forward to making this amazing recipe. I lost a sibling in the past few weeks and as he was slipping away all I could do was bake to comfort myself.

Michelle,
I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your sibling within the craziness of the world right now. Time will be your best friend in the weeks, months, years to come. I had to process and work through the pain, for quite some time, after my losses. Take all the time you need for that. Know that it gets easier. I think it's wonderful that you're using baking as a way of comfort, creating something beautiful. I hope it continues to get you through these hard times. My condolences go out to you and your family. Thank you for your kind words.

This story warmed and broke my heart as it hits so close to home. I lost my mother (she had just met my s.o. during her last couple of months on this earth in the hospital) several months ago due to an illness and now my maternal grandmother is beginning to slip away (she lives outside of the states and thanks to Covid19, we can't fly to see her). Thanks Kim, for sharing your story. Food makes me feel connected to them and holds the fondest memories of them. That was how they showed us love, even though they may not express it as much.

Tiffany,
Thank you for sharing your story! I will be holding your grandmother in the light and in my prayers. I couldn't imagine losing someone I loved and not being able to be with them due to a pandemic. I know she knows that you want to be there, and, that, sometimes is enough for them (the thought alone). I'm also sorry that you lost your mother, too. Just talking about it helps (which I didn't do for so long). I'm glad that food keeps you connected and you found a way to work through your grief. Hang in there. All my love.

Thanks so much Kim, that means a lot ❤️. I am sorry for your losses as well. You just reminded me of how we used to cook together and recreating their recipes (or my attempt anyway haha) makes me feel connected and close to them. I can't wait to try your grandmother's swiss roll recipe! Thank you for your article and looking forward to reading more from you!
