Thank you for your beautifully written essay. It brought emotions of sadness, joy and laughter! Your mother struggled as a single mom but what a resourceful and strong individual she is. Just like music, food brings us back to memories of the places & emotions we experienced. Your wonderful essay documents these memories so they can be passed on in your family. Even though I have transitioned to an electronic recipe organizer, I still have a recipe box with handwritten recipes. I can’t wait to try the Cheesburger Pie recipe!

Oh the 1970s !! Oh the joy frozen drenched green beans with slivered almonds, the horror of moms experimental lentil loaf, the resignation of another plate of van de camp frozen fish sticks.

So glad you can relate, Sara! Yes, frozen fish filets were in heavy rotation in our kitchen nook as well. I think our brand was Mrs. Paul's :) Thanks for reading!

What an amazing story, and what an amazing mom. I'm so proud of her! Go, Mom!
I grew up in the 80's (in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio), so your picture and story brought back happy, reminiscent tears.
I can't wait to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing it, and your story.

This beautiful essay brought tears to my eyes. I hope my daughters share the same sorts of memories of our nightly dinners when they’re older. I have a recipe index card box with worn collected gems that I’m planning to pass on to them when they strike out on their own, hopefully to help them start the cycle again with their own families. We’ll definitely try the cheeseburger pie. 😊❤️
