I first learned about arepas in Caracas while visiting family friends. This was over 22 years ago. Loved the arepas and made them side by side with the family’s cook. She did not speak any English and my Spanish is terrible. I’ve tried to make them many times, but they never have that fluffy inner texture like the ones I had in Venezuela.

Glad these are being mentioned and you are enjoying. Here in the south we call them hoe cakes or scalded cornbread. My grandmother use to make them all the time. I prefer yellow cornmeal and we have even ground our own cornmeal as a kid.

Where's the recipe? After the lengthy autobiography and dissection of your feelings, there could at least be a recipe pay off. Yes dear of course I'm glad you're well.

“I didn’t even have to call and ask for the recipe; it’s conveniently listed on the back of the cornmeal bag.”

Thank you for the article and a little of yourself. Beautiful essay. I love that you placed the origin of the arepa in its correct geographical origin and not generalized to 'South America'

Good lord. This is NOT an article about arepas so much as it is an essay on trying to “normalize” behaviors, in a sneaky way. Depression, eating disorders, bi-sexuality are just a few.
I am sure your family cringes every time you post an article outing all of this. You are a freaking mess.

It sounds like Kristen's family is loving and supportive, and likely they don't "cringe" because she is open about her mental health issues. It is so important to have these discussions and de-stigmatize seeking help for depression and other mental illnesses. Lucky for you if you have never lost a loved one to depression, but many of us have, and mean-spirited comments only further hurt people who are trying to be well.
Good piece, Kristen...I hope your list of safe foods continues to grow; I know a bit about what that is like. Thank you for sharing :-)

Not to mention bi-sexuality isn’t a “behavior” (an unacceptable behavior, by the tone of your comment), but a sexual orientation. I had the exact opposite reaction to this article and fully appreciated the normality of how casually it was introduced as one of the many things we learned about the author in this very well-written piece.

She said the recipe, only three ingredients, is on the back of the cornmeal bag ☺️
