Too Many Cooks: This Week's Best

April 26, 2013

You'll be hearing from the staff at FOOD52 every week in Too Many Cooks, our group column in which we pool our answers to questions about food, cooking, life, and more.

Today, we're sharing the dishes that set this week apart.

Food52 HQ is a fun place to work. There are always snacks, there are sometimes dogs, and we've even got a brand new kitchen to cook in. (We'll be revealing it soon -- stay tuned!)

We're lucky to work with other people who share our passion for cooking -- work chatter is always interspersed with talk of new favorite recipes or kitchen struggles. Today, we're taking that conversation online and asking:

What's the best thing you made this week?

Did you tackle that homemade challah that's been eluding you? Did you add a new salad to your lunch lineup? Let us know in the comments!

Challah

Brette: Brown butter blondies with caramelized white chocolate.

Christina: Grilled stream trout with green garlic.

Sarah: It's a tie: Thai Quinoa Bowls with Crispy Baked Tofu, and White Chocolate and Toasted Pecan cookies.

Bryce: Baked Chili Cheese Fries.

Amanda Li: Spicy Shrimp!

Jason: Buttermilk fried chicken and mashed sweet potatoes.

Karl: Not gonna lie: scrambled eggs with Sriracha and a side of sautéed swiss chard with fresh lemon juice.

Amanda: Lamb ragu -- onions, garlic, beer, tomatoes, fresh bay leaves.

Lauren: Lemony Cream Cheese Pancakes!

Michael: It was technically last week, but: Sfoglini beet fusilli with favas, shallots, crème fraîche, parmesan, and lime.

Kristen: Fried eggs over sautéed kale with bacon, leeks, and vinegar. (Small upgrade from bacon and eggs, which is like my Easy Mac.)

Lindsay: A prune cake with pears.

Beatrice: Tofu scramble, with sautéed spinach on toasted rye bread!

Maddy: Lots of sautéed greens this week! I made Merrill's Banana Bread -- studded with mini dark chocolate chips and with a dash of cinnamon in the mix.

Jennifer: I guess the stuff I made at the photoshoot doesn't count...so I'd say meatloaf, roasted potatoes and steamed asparagus with red pepper flakes.

Kenzi: I'm planning on wrangling some stinging nettles tonight -- that might be the best thing. It could also be the worst. We'll see!

Ryan: Chicken salad sandwich with pea shoots and avocado.

Marian: I made ramp pizza, because I'm a bandwagon-hopper.

Will: Tangerine guacamole with purple habaneros. I love fruited guacs, but not fruited salsas!

Stephanie: I made pizza with the Jim Lahey dough and added peppers, onions, mushrooms, and mozzarella. It was delicious, though I kind of wish it had been chili cheese fries.

What was the best thing you made all week?

I made secret ingredient red onion and rhubarb jam. It is the first time in a long time that I have made it, maybe 8 years. It has been 8 to many.

It's a toss up between a banana cake using Kim Laidlaw's recipe from Williams-Sonoma Home Baked Comfort and my Asian-glazed Chicken Thighs with rice. But now I wish I made chili cheese fries, too.

Steamed Brussels sprouts, Jamie Oliver's Pasta Bianca with a baked pesto chicken tomato mozzarella thing. I think part of why I enjoyed it so much was because I wanted to try stripping pasta down to being more basic than my usual ways, and that worked really well! I think my husband's favorite was the nachos I made with Tillamook cheddar, a black bean corn salad and Trader Joe's Quinoa and Black Bean infused chips.

Carnitas. Again. I may need a 12-step program or something.

Ask me next week, and it'll probably have something to do with the honkin' can of salt-packed anchovies I bought this week.

Ooh! I keep looking for those so I can make April Bloomfield's Caesar Salad.
