And fry them first, then cook them in the gravy (sauce). Drain after frying. Use ground pork, beef and veal. (Kitchen remodel, so cooking in apartment.)
When you make meatballs Smaug , how many viable meatballs do you get. I make them often and can’t say exactly how many I will make with approximately 1 lb of ground meat.
It's been a while- I did once calculate (after seeing innumerable stew recipes calling for 2" cubes of meat) that a 2" cube would be approximately 1/4 lb. As I recall, I get about a dozen meatballs out of a pound of meat, but as I say it's been a while.
Exactly! Who knows? But for some reason, I always end up with an odd amount. 11, 13...it's never the 12 that is the "standard". I'm making 4 lbs of meatballs today. I'll post the total and just divide by 4. :)
9. Its always an odd number if done correctly. Add breadcrumbs, an egg, onion, garlic and spices and the pound becomes a pound plus. So, definitely 9 2" meatballs, if done right. (If you are eyeballing the size...maybe 11.) An even number is just...odd.
You'd probably do best to measure them, but a 2" meatball will be 8 times the size of a 1". That would be a huge meatball- I'd have my doubts about it's viability.
8 meatballs.... 2-inch meatballs are about two ounces each there's only 16 ounces in one pound. And 1 inch meatballs equal about 1 ounce and they're 16 in a pound. See photo below that is one pound one inch at one ounce each .....
Are you adding bread or breadcrumbs to the meat? You will get considerably more if you do. I looked this recipe http://www.food52.com/recipes/823_hungarian_meatballs looks like the meatballs are small and she uses 1 1/2 pounds of ground meat plus breadcrumbs and it yields between 20 and 30 meatballs. No way to give you an exact answer but this should ballpark it.
