Trying to make a scone recipe that calls for heavy cream, but all I have is buttermilk...will that work?

Yes! Though different, it will be very good. Be sure to add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda for every 8 ounces of buttermilk to neutralize the acid, or your rise will be a bit anemic.

It works for me. In the recipe I created, I substitute most anything (buttermilk, yogurt, sour cream, heavy cream, etc) for the dairy component. Flavor will vary a bit with each.
