For me it's either a really nice steak, or seared scallops. Something that is tasty, doesn't take the chef forever in the kitchen, and isn't messy to eat (like crab which I also love, but what a pain!), then usually roasted or mashed potatoes, and a lovely salad appropriate to the season. For dessert (my birthday is in the winter) chocolate lava cakes. Always chocolate in the winter to make me happy.
I will admit, the few times someone has cooked me roasted chicken, I've been supremely happy. Since your friend's b'day is tomorrow, roast chicken or steak would be a simple, awesome main accompanied by roasted potatoes or root veg and a green salad. For chicken, I rub a tarragon, garlic, and lemon compound butter under the skin; for steak, I like to rub it with just a little brown sugar and thyme before grilling or pan-frying. Those things are also easy to scale up or down depending on how many for whom you're cooking. Hope that helps! You've got a lucky friend!
