can I substitute vanilla for a one vanilla bean in a chocolate pudding recipe? How much

Most sources suggest 1 to 2 teaspoons vanilla extract to substitute for 1 vanilla bean. If the pudding serves 4 to 6, I'd probably use just 1 teaspoon so its flavor doesn't get in the way of the chocolate.
