grilling new york strip steaks

for an average new york strip how long to grill for rare, medium rare, and then how long to sit tented or best way to finish them?

I'm a purist and like my steak seasoned simply with salt and pepper. Grill on high heat for 3 minutes per side for a typical 1" thick steak, then drop the heat to low on the second side and cook gently for another 2-3 minutes. Since every steak varies, you should invest in an instant read thermometer to check internal temperature for best results. For a rare steak, I like to cook to an internal temp of 110 degrees F, then transfer to a plate and rest the steak until you see juices start to run from the edges of the steak, maybe 3 minutes or so so the juices can redistribute themselves.

Thank you very much! The steaks turned out great. I have only grilled filets prior and was not sure if there was any difference in the process.
