Soaking Beans

Why didn't my chickpeas swell when soaked overnight? Will this be a problem in a falafel recipe?

normally adding a pinch of bicarbonate of soda or baking soda will do the trick to get them fluffy. Its still a chemical mind you!

A lot of times chickpeas don't swell much - shouldn't be a problem, just follow the recipe as usual.
