Looking to make a very special birthday cake for a very special person.
Cooks illustrated had a great recipe in the November 2012 issue. I made it twice and it turned out beautifully. It takes time, but is not complicated. Their magazine web site charges for access, but this seems to be a copy. http://www.keyingredient...Good luck.
smitten kitchen just posted one recently. http://smittenkitchen.com...
There is also a recipe in the Flour cookbook, by Joanne Chang.
Not a dacquoise but this one makes a wondrous birthday cake: http://buttersugarflowers... (Make two layers instead of one, and frost with cream cheese or browned butter icing.)

Well played. You deserve a cookie.
