I pickled beans and asparagus. Why do they sometimes get skinny and wrinkly and how can I prevent it?

The brine can pull some of the liquid out of the asparagus, making them wrinkly, but they might plump back up in time. Read more here: http://county.wsu.edu/chelan-douglas/health/Documents/Pickling%20Asparagus.pdf
